While not strictly
part of IAEP Local 95, we at Worcester EMS could not do our jobs without
our Communications Specialists. These dedicated professionals are all
certified to at least the EMT-Basic level, have all received training
from the Commonwealth’s Statewide Emergency Telecommunications
Board in the use and operation of the Enhanced 9-1-1 panels at our telecommunications
office. Communications Specialists are also trained to dispatch the UMass
Memorial LifeFlight Helicopter, receive trauma and medical referals,
toxicology consult requests and many other requests from the UMass Memorial
and Central Massachusetts communities.
The Communications Center can be every bit
as stressful as any scene call; flight crews and paramedics only have
to concentrate on one call at a time, whereas the Communications Specialists
frequently juggle more than one task.

UPDATE: In April 2006, the Communications
Center moved to is new home in the Lakeside Building at the University
Campus. For the first time in almost 25 years, the Communications Specialists
have a permanent home in an actual building.
